Llangadog is situated in the heart of the Towy Valley half way between Llandeilo and Llandovery. A village with a population of approximately 1000 people it is situated on the western edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park and is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills and pasture with stunning views towards the Black Mountain. The main business is agriculture but there are several small and medium sized businesses here including a builders merchant and an agricultural feed and supply shop. The beautiful countryside surrounding the village and its nearness to the Brecon Beacons makes it a draw for tourists. The village is well served by places to stay, eat and drink.

Capel Gwynfe is a small village about 3 miles to the south and west of Llangadog with a picturesque church dating from 1898 and a 19th Century church hall. The area primarily consists of agricultural lands and its location in the foothills of the Brecon Beacons make it an ideal starting point for walkers and cyclists. It was voted Village of the Year for Carmarthenshire in 2004. In additon to this website, the villagers of Gwynfe have their own website at http://www.gwynfe.ik.com

Bethlehem is a village to the south of Llangadog perched on the hillside overlooking the Towy flood plain. Bethlehem Post Office is renowned for franking cards at Christmas time and thousands of people each year send their cards to be stamped with the Bethlehem post mark. Behind the village is Garn Goch which is a bracken covered hillside which turns a glorious red in Autumn and Winter and is the site of an Iron Age Hill fort.

Post Office Closures

Royal Mail are consulting the public on plans to close 40 post offices across south and west Wales and replace a further 19 with an "outreach service". According to information published on 3rd June there are no plans to close the Llangadog branch. However, this may be subject to a further review after a six-week local public consultation before a final decision is made, so it is important to keep making it clear just how vital our local post office is to our local community.
The 6-week consultation period for this area will end on 14th July 2008.
Other post offices in the area, including Rhandirmwyn, Llanrwda, Brechfa, Dryslwyn, Llanpumpsaint, Nantgaredig, Llansteffan, Carmel and Fairfach, are likely to affected by these plans.
For further information see www.postoffice.co.uk/networkchange or telephone the customer hotline on 0845-7223344 of email consultation@postoffice.co.uk

Video Oral History of Llangadog Project
With the support of Antur Teifi a small team has been assembled to compile a video oral history of Llangadog. The idea is to record local scenes and people's stories of the community within living memory. These will be combined with material already gathered and made available in the form of a full colour DVD, hopefully by the autumn of 2008.
Training of the members of the project has already started at Lampeter University, and you may well see us at work around the village and surrounding country over the summer months. If you would like to be involved, would like to contribute your own memories, or know of others who would be willing to be included, please contact Peter Berry on 01550-777980 or Wyn Jones on 01550-777254.
Copies of the DVD will be deposited at the National Library in Aberystwyth and also available for purchase (more details later).

Windy Day for the Wedding
Saturday, 24th May turned out to be a little windy for Richard and Win Morgan's daughter Angharad's wedding to Marcus at Seion Baptist Church, but the bride still managed to look perfectly lovely.

SOS - Would You Like to Adopt Some Chickens?

There are 25,000 battery hens available throughout June from Lampeter Eggs. These hens are just one year old but will go for slaughter at the end of June if unclaimed. (Hens can live for about 8 years.) Normally The Battery Hen Welfare Trust rescues and rehomes some of these hens - however they are unable to in this area for the next couple of months so instead we can go direct to the farm.

The advantages of free-ranging hens are that they clean up slugs etc; fertilize the ground and of course you get a few eggs too! They can also be quite entertaining to watch, all with varying personalities. Important to read up the info on caring for ex-bats on the website as initially they need a bit of extra TLC to get them back into good health.

Each hen costs £1.00...yes, one pound!
Contact Mrs Davies at Lampeter Eggs on 01570 422683 for directions to the farm and to check collection times (generally you can turn up most days, apart from 1.00 - 1.30 pm when she's at lunch; best to check weekend times). You can ask her to bring the hens out so you do not have to go into the battery. Take a box/pet carrier with you.

For really good info/support on caring for ex-bats go to: www.thehenshouse.co.uk

So come on....let's give some hens the chance of a better life.

Noticeboard

The village now has a posh new Noticeboard in the Square on the wall outside the Castle Hotel. Something for us all to keep an eye on! (The key is available behind the bar in the Castle).
Later note
: Sadly this noticeboard is no longer looking so posh! Condensation inside the display panel now makes it virtually impossible to see anything beyond the glass and the notices themselves are running into oblivion. It really does need some urgent loving care and attention.
